I wish I’d had proper discipline in my life at 18.
When I finally had some, from my wife Susan, I realised how much easier things could have been.People who understand drug abuse know that you are not dealing with a rational mind.
My attitude was always, “F*** it. I don‘t care. I don’t care about fame. I don’t care if I f*** up my career. It‘s not important to me.”
I met my wife in 2003 in Montreal on the film Gothika, which she was produceing. She was in no hurry to get involved at all.In fact, she was not looking for a relationship and admits she thought I was “strange”. But we had already hooked up by the time she produced my next film, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang . She has since given me a sense of life and order. At the end of the day, I find that I am really a conventional guy.

I like laying out my clothes the night before and I like the thought of saying. “This means something”. For some years, nothing made sense.I’ve found that I like living to an ideal. I always thought it was unrealistic and unnatural to be monogamous, but decided to try. It works! I married fast before (to Deborah Falconer, two months after meeting, with whom he has a son, Indio, 19) but we were married for 12 years.I wanted to get married to Susan, because I believe in marriage. It does not mean. “Let‘s just have some kids and see what happens.” (They have a 16-month-old son, Exton.)

If  people have kids and decide not to marry, then that is their choice. I prefer it my way.
I think, now, that if I had to pick half of my life to have regrets about, it‘s much better that it’s the first half.
I’ve had time to clean up.
I see well-known people in Los Angeles around my age or a little older who have never seemed to make a false move in the past. But they are now coming unravelled.None of this is making headlines – yet. But my point is that life can have some strange twists and turns and you never know when things will change.I felt like that when I met Susan. I had been in Los Angeles for exactly 20 years and suddenly there was a sense of life having cycles and circles.
I had missed so much up to that point. You know those mornings when you can’t hit your a** with both hands and you feel out of synch? That was life for me – permanently.

Fame? It comes at a price.
I played Charlie Chaplin (in 1992’s Chaplin)- the most famous face in the world in the 1920s. He found it so strange and complicated even in those days. How do I feel about my treatment by the Press? I have no complaints.
Newspapers were not to blame for any— thing that happened to me.If you talk to an alcoholic, one of the hardest things he has to deal with once he stops is that he runs out of excuses.
You have all these things you are going to do. if only you did not drink. It could be writing a book or a song.
I had to take a good look at myself and say, “Those ideas you had for all those years were never all that cool”. I was able to see them in the cold light of day and stop pretending.

My generation blew the opportunity to take advantage of the Sixties revolution. We were the cokehead dumbdumbs. I don’t know what the f*** we did. I didn’t go anywhere – I just became a Jack-in-the-box.
We were left to our own devices and never felt our parents and teachers were on the same page.
They didn’t monitor us properly. And now there’s our generation thinking that they must protect those who follow.
The 18-and-under crowd are so well taken care of, compared to us.They might get a little resentful because all this nurturing can only go so far before they start going out and taking their own hard knocks.
Discipline in life is so important. It will affect everything you do.
I might sound square. But it’s true.
